During my time at ABCmouse/Age of Learning, I worked as an illustrator and designer for online and printable activities.
Here is another example of a paint-by illustration. In this, kids would identify sight words and color in the word's section of illustration with the corresponding color.
With enough of the illustration colored in correctly, broken up sections would begin to get clearer.
Paint-bys were always an interesting activity.  It meant designing an illustration that could be visually broken up so that the full image was not immediately known. Since there were multiple skill levels kids could complete, this also meant various degrees of visual complexity. Children could then reveal the final image and reinforce concepts taught throughout the lesson!
